The first issue is out now. This week the City Council adopted the Downtown Specific Plan, the biggest land-use decision Lodi has made in years. And next Tuesday, June 9, the Council holds a study session on how the city should grow at its edges, which is a real opening to weigh in before anything is decided.

With fall comes a new selection of amazing fruits that are grown locally. One thing I find fascinating about these fruits is they all have longer shelf lives than summer fruits, lending themselves to overwintering in times before ubiquitous fruit year round created by the Supermarket.

We attempt to study and follow these natural rhythms so have once again changed deliveries to Every 2 weeks.

To take advantage of this, we suggest ordering larger quantities, which are an even better value and can be delivered cheaper than you can find at the grocery store!

During the 1890's, Lodi's status as Watermelon Capital of the World was in decline. A lowering water table and earlier crop being grown to the south combined to make the melons less economical.

It was this difficult environment that prompted Lodi farmers to adapt once again and experiment with a crop they would later realize was ideal for its climate, soil and growing season: Grapes.

"Conditions were hard before we started raising grapes in the 1900s. No one noticed it especially because everyone was struggling. When we started planting grapes, everything seemed to pick up,” said one Lodi farmer of the time. (Lodi News Article, 2013)1

A Stockton newspaper reporter in 1905 wrote:

And pickup they did, so much so that in 1907 Lodi resident Charles Rey imagined a carnival to celebrate this success and "advertise to the world the beauty and value of the Tokay grape." Held just one year, this multi-day carnival was an extravagant event, attended even by the Governor. It was to be such an important event that a proper entry was needed as a gateway for the event. Today that entrance, the Lodi Arch, still stands as a herald calling back to the origin of Lodi Grapes and their role as the foundation to the community of Lodi we know today.

What the turn of the century farmers identified was the unique ability of a particular variety of grape the Flame Tokay, do ripen to its ideal dark red color in the climate and terroir of Lodi. The Flame Tokay was not only ideal as a winegrape, it was an excellent eating frsh table grape, which allowed Lodi farmers to carry on during Prohibition.

We are excited to be able to not only offer the amazing seedles grapes from last year, but also Tokay grapes from vines over 100 years old. These grapes are a direct connection to these simpler times.

When I stumbled across this photo in Steve Mann’s ‘Lodi: The Early Years Volume II’ I was blown away that as early as 1937, fresh produce from local vendors was being delivered to homes in Lodi. When thinking through this, it is the solution built for the customer: delivery to the door at the optimal freshness.

The principal object of our mission is to restore this optimization for freshness and customer experience, 1not industrial profits.

In our effort improve customer experience, we have made an update to when your order is billed. Starting this week, we have updated the order renewal date to Sundays! This allows the most possible time for you to go and update your order, while still allowing us to coordinate with the farms on Monday morning what we will need for our deliveries on Tuesday.

Every Wednesday morning for the past couple months, we have been delivering high quality fruits to both the 180 Teen Center and Lodi House. It’s a small gift of the extra fruits that we order to verify quality, to organizations we believe do great work for the community.

We have preferred to make this a quiet contribution as we do not do this for the PR. However, this morning I had the thought: this is only possible because of our customers! They ought to know that their purchase helps make this possible.
